Lee Middle School in San Angelo, TX has been working with the Middle School Matters Institute on improving reading and math instruction. While focusing heavily on instructional practices, the staff did not want to ignore the importance of informed decision making. For data use to truly be part of a school’s culture, principals must dedicate structured time for staff collaboration so that important data can be examined and instructional adjustments can be made. During vertical alignment meetings, leaders guide and support teachers in using data to drive instruction. This establishes and communicates a strong commitment to evidence-based decision making and promotes academic success for all students at Lee Middle School.
